The Lin Family Garden

Born in an artistic family, Hsu Pei-Cheng presents her works with an impeccable poetic taste and ingenious composition skills, carefully arranging objects in her painting so as to make it a story-telling narrative. Choosing “parks,” an essential part of collective memory in Taiwan, as the topic, Hsu Pei-Cheng’s 《The Lin Family Garden》 reinterprets the well-known place through imagination rather than directly illustrating the reality. In the painting, colors with an oriental touch, together with familiar scenes in Taiwan, seem to remind people of the past but at the same time lead them to transcend the reality.

Hsu loves to draw from an overlook perspective. Presented in a plan view, the beautiful scenes in the park seem to be flattened. Colored with a warm tone of yellow, the painting creates a warm but enigmatic feeling. The maze-like composition encourages people to utilize the clues given in the painting, trying to locate a familiar corner from memory.
